Myths and Heroes

Today, I’m going to deal with the notion of myths and heroes. To begin with, I’d like to begin by giving a definition of this notion. First, a myth can be defined as a story about gods and heroes, it can be a popular belief or a tradition or a false notion. A hero can be a mythological figure, a person who is admired for his or her achievements, a superhero or maybe a role model or an icon. During this year, we studied several documents about myths and heroes and particularly “Real Vampires” and Dracula. Thereby I decided to focus on the vampires to illustrate this notion. And I’ll try to answer the question: Where does the fascination for vampires come from? This question is quite interesting so I would first like to concentrate on the creation, the birth, of vampires and then I will move on to the link that bring us closer to vampires.

First of all, we studied the figure who inspired the emergence of the vampire, who is the romantic hero. The romantic hero is dishelved, pale, lonely, sad and thoughtful. But that’s not all! If we take the example of the most popular vampire, Dracula, created by Bram Stoker, we can notice that historical figures inspired the author. Vlad IV Dracula and Countess Elizabeth Bathory. Vlad IV Dracula, also called the Dragon, was a prince with a castle from the 15th century, living the actual Romania. He was cruel and bloodthirsty because he killed innocent victims, beggars and poor people. Countess Elizabeth Bathory from the late 17th century is a beautiful but vain and narcissistic woman. Everyday she looked at herself in the mirror but couldn’t bear ageing. She killed at least 650 innocent girls for their blood that would supposedly prevent her from getting old. This is how Bram Stoker created Dracula, he surely took the name from Vlad IV, moreover, everybody know that Dracula is bloodlust, cruel, narcissistic, which corresponds well to the two historical figures we have just described. And we also know that Dracula is a powerful enemy through his physic, he is tall, thin and scary. He has sharp teeth and looks very strong and brutal. But he also has supernatural powers, he has the ability to vanish, he can control the natural elements – he is superhuman – and most of all he is immune to conventional forms of attack. Therefore, now that we have the origins and the entire description of Dracula, let’s find the link between this superhuman and us, to finally explain this fascination we have for them.

As a starting point, everybody wants to have supernatural powers, like controlling the nature or transform our self in different shapes (wolf, bat…). And who does? Vampires! Besides, they are handsome, and everybody wants to be comely! The vampires are so attractive and the worst is that they will be attractive and handsome to the end of time!! In addition, we can notice that most of the vampires have an adorable accent, the one when you are rolling the “R”, the one we love to mimic. Moreover, we love vampires because they are legends, they are myths, they are everywhere since we learn how to read. Actually, the vampires are everywhere, in the books, in the series, in the movies, like Twilight, Dracula, Buffy against the vampires, and others. In an original way, it permits us to discover a new culture, a new vision of the world. Just imagine if vampires exit, because we have some evidences which allows us to believe they are real, like physically, they are almost like us, just a little bit better with their superpowers. They are our vanity, we want to be like them, we need it, so we mediate them like they are real. And that’s the magic, the side very fascinating of the vampires, what if they really exist?
