Notion n°2

I am going to talk about the notion Myths and Heroes. At first, I would like to give you a definition of this notion : A Myth can be defined as a story about gods and heroes, it can be a popular belief or a tradition or a false notion. A Hero can be a mythological figure, a person who is admired for his or her archivement, a superhero a role model or an icon.

What symbolizes the Scottish Identity ?

To answer this question, I will use four documents seen in class; firstly a text on the loch ness monster entitled "April 2014: Is Nessie Back?", also a text on the life of Robert Burns whose title is "Burns Night around the world", then a text on St Andrew entitled "The story of The Saltire", and finally an audio text on the war, these are soldiers with a bagpipe "The pipers of the trenches".

In this first part, I'm going to talk about Scottish heroes. Since the beginning of mankind, some people or groups of people have distinguished themselves by their actions, their words or their qualities and are considered heroes in society and in people's minds. I took 3 documents, that of Saint Andrew, Robert Burns and the pipers. In these documents we find several heroes who are popular in their country, for what they did, they marked the history of Scotland in different ways, war, poetry, religion… They are now famous celebrities all over the world. So they are admired for their achievements, noble qualities as their strength and their courage. Then there is hero who wants change the History as a defender of common values.

In a second part, we will see the Scottish myths, here I will use 2 documents, Nessie and the saltire. The myth tells a story that has always existed, or almost, and that people believe true. They are therefore constantly referring to this myth to understand their own situation. In the history of Loch Ness and Saint Andrews, most people think that these real and are true stories of Scotland. It is uncertain whether these stories are true or false, everyone has their opinion on that. These myths become popular thanks to the tourism and the culture of the country as for the flag of "the saltire".

We can see that these Scottish heroes and legends are very important for the Scots, I really like the idea because we have discovered people who have played popular roles very important. And we could also discover the culture of Scotland is a country that I would like to visit.
