For centuries, mankind has been fascinated by the idea of progress. From scientists to writers, all asked the same questions : What if we could do this? What if we could do that? what was considered fiction yesterday, is science today. But is the fiction today, a science for tomorrow?
For a few decades at least, writers imagined strories of possible futures involving some kind of science. But some of these stories accuratelly predicted the science we have today. The earliest exemple can be drew from Jules Vernes novels where he predicted the moon landing. Further more, the movie Gattaca predicted the possibility of choosing the gender of your offspring, which is a reality today. The last example would be predicted a surveillance network. This can be seen today litteraly everywhere.
But sometimes, science deliberately draws inspiration from fiction. This often happens when the books or the movie leaves a great mark on its generation. The biggest one has to be the "laws of robotics" imagined in the novel "the robotics" by Asimov. Today every robot has these laws implemented into his A.I.
But the most "pop-culture" exemple would be the "hoverbord" from "back to the future II" which is a wheelless skatebord that Marty uses in 2015. As in the movie, some company actualy developped hoverboard, this year, as a reference to its inspiration.
As for the future, some fictions today may be a science tomorow. In the movie "Alone on Mars", Matt Daemon is traped on the planet Mars and has to survive using autarcy. But the NASA is actualy working on ways to instal live on Mars in a sustanible way. Further more, in 2007, the videogame "assassin's creed " introduced the concept of reading our ancertors memories using our DNA. Last year, a team of scientists actualy discovered that some acquired reflexes by rats are given to their offspring througs DNA.
In conclusion, we have to keep an open mind when facing science fiction, as it may become a reality in a few years
