SPACES AND EXCHANGES

Problématique : What drives immigrants to leave their countries and therefore if the American Dream really exists.

I chose the topic « Spaces and Exchanges » for my presentation. Actually, this notion deals with the geographical and symbolic areas that all societies occupy and the interactions between men and different societies.

Immigration is related to this notion because it involves the movement of legals and illegals people to others countries.

We are going to see what drives immigrants to leave their countries and therefore if the American Dream really exists

As a first step, we’ll start to see immigration to the  usa and as a second step we will see immigration to the rest of the world.

First of all, different reasons lead to immigration, indeed, some people leave their countries for studies, work or because job issues. In class, we saw the testimony of a woman called Fang Yi Sheu. She comes from Taiwan but lives in New York City. She immigrated to NY in order to practice dance on the world stage, because in the United States, there are more opportunities to become a pro dancer than any other place in the world. In that case immigration is beneficial to her because she can realize her dream, her American dream. But she has to admit that she feels homesick, she doesn’t really appreciate her life in America, she doesn’t know how to enjoy her life in NY.

So, yes, the american still exists because she is chasing her dreams, trying to fulfill them, but it’s still a dream because reality catches her up.

Then, some people came to the USA, because they wanted to. Immigrants, hope to have a better quality of life. Indeed, between 1845 and 1948, 30 million Europeans arrived in the United States. For example, the Irish left for economic issues because there was the potatoes famine, all the potatoes were destroyed because of a disease, so a lot of Irish left for America. Moreover, Italian immigration was fuelled by dire poverty. According to the Europeans, live in the USA is a dream and it’s still one.

To sum up, work, studies, job issues or a better way of life drive immigrants to leave their country. The Unites States seems to be the ideal destination to achieve one’s goal. They leave their country to realize their dreams, or to live the American Dream, sometimes it’s beneficial but it’s still a dream. They have to be careful and to keep their feet on the ground.

Now we are going to see the reasons of immigration to the rest of the world

Firstly, immigrants came to the USA to escape poverty, for freedom and success. This vision of the United States is idealized because at the time there was the segregation. This search for the American dream by black immigrants illustrates a geographical exchange of people between country especially after black slavery. However, black people suffered of many assaults and humilations.
