Edward Hopper, born in 1882 and died in 1967, was an American Painter who is known for painting american landscapes and cityscapes.
His paints are known for expressing urban isolation and his works highlight existential loneliness in the industrial city and portrays people in cities which are lonely.
In general, cities are represented as very noisy, full of life, crowded with people. This vision of the city contrasts with the paints of Hopper which are the exact opposite. Hopper’s works give the impression that even a buzzing city couldn’t remedy isolation, but reinforce it by putting forward the absence of link between each person .
Behind the apparent simplicity of the paintings is a great complexity and depth. The absence of details is very present in the paints of Hopper, it invites the spectator to complete the image by imagining the past events and the one that arrive, on the relationships between the characters, and on the feelings and anxieties which can emerge from the characters.
In Nighthawks 1942,the painter uses fade colours, the landscape looks like in an old America , there are only 4 characters in the diner late at night with the empty streets in the background. The guy who is alone looks sad, him and the other guest have the same clothes which give the impression that they are clones like if these two people have not their own personality. The four city dwellers seem as separate and distant from the viewer as they are from one another..
In Automat 1927, the Colors are similar with the other paints, chop Suey and nighthawks, and the scene is also in a dinner
The reflection of identical rows of lights extends through the window made black by the night gives an impression of depth and endless solitude. Moreover,The girl looks like she is waiting for someone because she’s on a table destined for two people, she is well-dressed and is wearing makeup
Chop Suey focuses upon two women seated at a restaurant table, at day this time. The colors are warm at the first ground and cold at the background. Despite this company each woman seems alone, lost in her own thoughts in a quiet space, while the couple in the background seems similarly uncommunicative.
The high angle of view, the female customer on the left and The man behind in the dark part of the paint, all add a sense of strangeness to the scene.
When I look at these paintings, I feel like Edward Hopper had the idea to depict a society where each person is remote from each other because of the immensity of the city where they evolve. The three artworks that we seen focus on a few quantity of people in an urban scenery in the pastcentury.ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffgggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg
