music that counts in the music business? (± 300 mots)

In the movie “Yesterday” by Danny Boyle, we see the evolution of a young singer who is the only one to remember the Beatles’ songs and becomes famous by singing them. In the movie, Jack’s agent keeps on treating him as a product that is going to bring her money. She even tells him that thanks to his success she will be able to buy a beach in the Bahamas. In this sense, music agents can be in search for money and nothing else, without having an interest in the artist’s music. We can therefore ask ourselves if music is the center of all interest in the music industry?

As its name suggests, music is the core of the music industry. However it depends for who. For the audience, the most important element of a song, an album or an artist is its quality. People would rather have less songs on an album as long as they are good rather than have 30 tracks with 5 good. So music does matter, as without it the whole industry collapses. However the interest of the audience may be the only interest regarding the music. Indeed, producers don’t always carry the music of an artist in their heart. Off course, that does not mean they do not do their job properly as they are still able to flare the potential. What matters to them most is the profit an artist can bring to a firm, an agency, a radio, etc. For instance, in France, the director of the radio “Skyrock” used to play rock artists and he had created the radio for the music he loved, to produce rock. However he understood before everybody else that hip-hop would explode in the coming years and therefore he had to produce hip-hop. As a result he made a great amount of money on a music he did not like. Music, like any other business, is surrounded by other interests that diverge from the core of the industry.

Finally, music does count in the music business but not as much as the money it can bring. Music is often put aside with producers that sign young talents and then squeeze all the creativity they have for a quick selling album and end up by throwing them away. The music industry is harsh and mischievous, sadly.
