MEXICAN BORDER
Hello everyone! I hope you’re all okay. Today, I would like to share with you a subject that is very important for me because :
- on the one hand, it concerns a current topic of society which is causing many political and economic debates and,
- on the other hand, because it affects and relates on Hispanic civilization which I particularly like
First of all, let me explain three key terms to understand our subject :
A border is a dividing line or frontier between political or geographic regions to avoid the emigration, which is the process of leaving a country permanently and going in another one. The current frontier between the USA and Mexico had been set up in 1853 and it stretches 3,145 kilometers. Finally, in the USA, some people think that all illegal immigrants should be deported immediately and that explains all the debates around this political subject.
So let me introduce now my problematic :
Is emigration really an appropriate solution to avoid the economical crisis of your country?
To answer this question, we need to analyse two parts of the topic.
First, emigration is considered by a lot of mexican people as the only way to escape from unemployment and poverty of their country.
In a second time, emigration is above all a very dangerous and uncertain journey which can lead them to discriminations or death.
I. Emigration is the only way to escape from unemployment and poverty ?
- United States, opulence symbol
For the mexican people, the United States is the representation of wealth and an easy way of life. This opulence symbol of the USA is well described in the painting of Frida Kahlo entitled Autorretrato en la frontera de México y Estados Unidos. Indeed, there is a confrontation between the two countries which marks the idea of a border between two totally different ways of life. On the left side, Mexico is associated with a traditional country, and old civilization where there are insecurity and violence. Whereas, the right side appears like a modern and industrial country which translates the idea of progress through the existence of smoke coming out of the company. Thus, the fact that this smoke seems to be contaminating the sky in Mexico, which can be a metaphor showing that the USA is a very attractive country for Mexicans.
- United States, an opportunity to be well payed
The United States is also an opportunity for mexican workers to be well paid. We can see that through two testimonies which traduced the opposition of this idea.
On the one hand, Dulce Pinzon in his painting wants to show that mexican workers are risking their lives to earn money and help their families because it’s very recurrent to see them sending money to Mexico. Those men and women are considered like heroes, who support very hard working conditions.
However, they are sometimes very rare cases of people who are living the american dream and are becoming very successful because of their work. It's the case of Alfredo Quinones, who became a very famous doctor from Harvard after illegally crossing the border due to the economic crisis in Mexico. Thus, he was promoted to psychology five years after coming to the USA, which means that he lived the American dream.
