I am going to talk about the notion “Idea of Progress” let start with a definition. The idea of progress is the belief that advances in technology, science and social organization can bring about a positive change to our society.
These progress can appear in different types such as Social, economic, technologic or scientific progress.
I will start by presenting one progress in the scientific field the “cloning” illustrate by an example then I will explain how a technological advancement can also be a social regression and finally I will conclude by express my personal point of view on the progress.
Scientific progress:
I would like to give a short definition of what are “clones”:
“It’s a population of identical units, cells, or individuals that derive from the same ancestral line.”
The word “cloning” appeared in 1903, it was created by the American Botanist called Herbert John Webber, he had replicated plants by asexual reproduction.
A more recent and illustrative case of cloning is Dolly.
In 1996, Dolly was the first mammal to be created by cloning and became the most famous sheep in history. Nowadays scientific have reproduce calves, a cow, two monkeys, a pig and a mouse.
But human cloning never finished in real results and it is now regulate by laws of the bioethics.
From a medical point of view it would be a great step forward for the human condition. This could be used to counter genetic disease, it also could be a source of genetically identical body parts for transplant treatment of injured individuals and save their lives.
This also would provide the opportunity for sterile couples to have babies.
From an Ethics point of view the question of the cloning is from a century a burning issue and is likely to remain so.
Social progress:
Nowadays the different spaces of the world are more and more connected to each other thanks to: internet, social media or computer network.
Ironically, I'm going to talk about the isolation of people with an example that we studied in class.
It’s a video called Look up made by Gary Turk, it is a about a lost young man falling in love with a woman who gives him the direction, and how their life together will be without the interference of social media. At the end of the video we can see their life if they don’t look up to each other and how lonely they would have been.
We have to understand that his generation and also mine is obsessed by technology and social networks. That is why he's saying that we need to make real relationships with people and one of the ways to do that is to look at our surroundings and less at our phones.
Conclusion:
To conclude, I’d say that progress is either all good or all bad. Put into the hands of human beings, that knowledge can be used for medicine or great advances. Progress can ameliorate our lives but it depend on the utilization of it.
