Idea of progress

We’re going to talk about the notion Idea of progress. The idea of progress can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change. A technical, scientific or social advance which contributes to making the world a better place. To approach this notion, we’re going to study the theme of the technical progress in the medicine and answer the question: Is it progress is always beneficial to society? In the first part, I will talk about that progress can be beneficial for humans. Then, in a second part I will talk about the progress that can be dangerous to our society.

I. Progress can be beneficial for human

First, I think that progress can be beneficial to our society because it can find solutions to the problem unsolved. Also, from a historical perspective, we see that the main steps of humanity have been marked by scientific discoveries that improve human life. For example, in class we studied an article "The Ekso bionic exoskeleton"

and in this article, we can see the positive points of the medical progress. Scientific progress can now allow people who are unable to walk, to walk. Like Bob Amelio, a basketball player who use wheelchairs to move around. The device who allow him to walk us a wearable robot called the Ekso Bionic Exoskeleton. It’s work with a battery-powered motors acted as his muscles, and then forcing his legs to move. It’s a groundbreaking device who replace legs. I think if progress can cure some diseases and allow people to be happier, then progress is a good thing.

II. Progress can be dangerous to our society

But on the other hand, the progress could have consequences. Then, today many scientists work for better progress. Like scientists who build the One Million Dollar Man. It can enable disabled people to improve their lives and even cure some diseases like Alzheimer’s. Nevertheless, it raises an ethical issue. Indeed, something strikes in the document. Professor Hugh Herr’s who lose his legs say that he prefers keeping his prosthetic legs than having the possibility to have his legs back because he think having normal bodies is boring. Maybe one day people will replace healthy limbs by prosthetics to be stronger. Technology in the future can meet problem, indeed it can go beyond the limits of evolution. When scientists play god, it can change what it is to be human.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, on the one hand, the progress can be beneficial to our society because the progress improves our lives and saves people. But on the other hand, progress can have adverse consequences because it will be go beyond the limits of evolution.
