IDEA OF PROGRESS

Problématique : in what the new technologies influence our lifestyles ?

1.Digital Detox

2.Digital Exclusion

I’m going to talk about the notion « idea of progress ».

Progress is a therm that covers a multitude of issues whether they social or technological, artistic or domestic. But perhaps the interpreation which proccupies us the most is the progress in technology which has revolution alised our everyday lives. We are confronted with these changes on a dally basics and have perhaps withnessed more changes in the last 20 years. We are going to wonder in what the new technologies influence our lifestyles ? On the first part we talk about the digital detox and on the second part about digital exclusion with some solutions.

Nowadays, people are always stuck to their digital devices. Many of them start using their smartphones as soon as they wake up in the mornig. They can’t switch them off ! Somes pend so much time on their digital divices that they go to digital detox camps to free themselves.

There is this digital detex camp in the heart of wales. It is so isolated no signal can reach there. It is the ideal place for people who want to leave their smartphone behind and have a break. They are not allowed to use their smartphones during the weekend but enjoy real communication, face to face.

A woman says she has become short-sighted because she spends too much timer staring at her screens. Another says she found out her life was happier when she was not watching a screen. They realize they have enjoyed this weekend without their smartphones. At the end, one of the tutord says that from now on, instead of texting their friends, they’ll maybe suggest to meet up for real.

However, if people are always staring at their devices, others are excluded from the new technologies. It’s been nearly 20 years since internet first entered but about 11% of British adults are digitally excluded. That means they have never used internet. That’s about 5.9 millions people and about 20% lack the basics needed to send and receive emails, use a search or complete online forms.

Many are members of the disadvantaged groups in society, elderly or disabled people, refuges, those on low incomes… People can’t afford the connection or can’t have access to training. Digital exclusion has many consequences : job searching is more complicated since jobs are often advertised online today. They can’t access governement services and can’t benefit from cheaper shopping optins online.

To conclude, the new technologies changed the world. They allow severeval things, people who are onlive save 560 pounds a year. However, there is a contrast between the people who use too much their smartphone and the people who are excluded.
