Emma Waston’s speech at the UN

She speaks on behalf of women and feminists about gender equality. She expect (want) women to same right         and opportinuties as men/ their male counterparts.

She expect to be equal to men, be on an equal footing with men.

She expect people to stop discrimaniting against women.

Disrespectful, sexits and narrow-minded people mistake feminism and men-hating. She strongly disagrees with them and such silly prejudicies.

  • Emma Watson is British actress famous for her part in Harry Potter. Sha was also appointed « goodwill ambassador for U.N  Women » in 2015, which means represents women/ she speaks on behalf of women she advocates for women’s rights
  • She’s delivering a speech in front of/ she is addressing the United Nation General Assembly, especially men
  • She fights for women’s rights and gender equality in other words, women should be given the same opportinuties and chances as men / their male counterparts / men and women should be equal/ on an equal footing / be treated the same / women shouldn’t be discriminated against.
  • According to Emma Waston, some narrow-minded people often mistake feminism for man-hating. They have prejudicies against feminists and believe taht if you defend women’s rights, it means you hate men, which is ridiculous/ which doesn’t make any sence. She wishes is stopped right now.
  • For example, she remembers that she was 8, she was called bossy because she wanted to direct a school party whereas the boys were not called so. Indeed, people condider that « proper » girls don’t (shouldn’t) direct/manage/rule / supervise a group. Actually, she denounces the fact that people expect girls to obey and submissive. Then, at 14, she was sexualized by the media. Later, , at 15, her girlfriends quit/ give up sports teams because they didn’t want to appear muscular. In our society, « real »/proper girls shouldn’t look « muscular » and are ot expected to practice physical and muscular sports, which are for boys. Finally, at 18, her male friends were unable to/ couldn’t express/ voice their feelings as it was not manly to do so. Indeed, men are expected to be strong and shouldn’t be emotional.
  • In fact, she denounces the stereotypes associated to boys, girls and feminists that is to say the stereotyped vision of boys and girls in our society which is also called « gender stereotypes »
  • That’s why, she expects mentalities to evolve and she expect women to earn as much as men/ their male counterparts. She espects women to make/ take their own decisions. She expects women to be involved in/ to take part in decision making in the country. She expects women to be respected as such as men/ be awarded the same respect as men. However, in some countries these rights are not granted.
