Drones: will they save us or destroy us?
Drones, are often associated to war, they suffer from a bad image. But they don’t only serve in that way, and beyond their commercial use, they can even serve the environment.
We know well that drones do not only belong to military purposes... The giant of online commerce: Amazon tests the new delivery system using drones in Canada, Google also puts itself into it, whereas in October, 2014, one of the first prototypes of " drone ambulance " - which transports as a matter of urgency a defibrillator to the victims of a cardiac accident, was revealed in the Netherlands by the University of Delft.
Another argument in favor of drones would be the making of a drone that would look less metallic then they usually do. Made mainly by means of mycelium, vegetative part of mushrooms or some filamentous bacteria, the quadricopter aims to be environment-friendly and biodegradable. The electric circuit was printed by means of ink with nanoparticles of silver to contribute to its ecolabel.
«Drones allow us to obtain more high-resolution of image than satellites. They can overfly rather big surfaces and take useful photos to detect natural housing environments and what threatens them. The only inconvenience, is that our drones need a ground cleared to land because of their system of fixed buckle ", explain Serge Wich, specialist of the primates and the rain forests. During a TED conference in November, 2013, his colleague Lian Pin Koh had exposed for a long time the interest of the use of drones.
The use of drones also presents a pecuniary advantage, in particular for the developing countries where are made most of the missions of environmental protection.
«At the moment, we pick up the pieces overflyings of drones ", regrets Gilles Gallinet who remains nevertheless confident in the future: «Drones could revolutionize the methods of work in the engineering ". In spite of their image, drones do not constitute an intrinsically bad technology; it is a technology as an other one, and we remember words of the British theologian Hugh Montefiore:
«the technology can be used for better or for worse. It transformed our way of life. "
