Ms. Lisa Davies Editor The Sydney Morning Herald, 1 Darling Island Road Pyrmont 2009, Sydney, New South Wales
Dear Ms. Davies: I am writing you to contribute for the column opened about whether Wikileaks is a good thing or a bad thing. I have thought for a long time to weight the pros and cons and to give you an opinion thoughted. I think that WikiLeaks is not completely a bad thing or completely a good thing, but it got positive points and limits to set. Today in our society the governments and all the instance that hold the power on the society hide some things that need to be known by the society. It is a fight between the power and the counter-power that represent the society who does not want to be completely controlled by the different instance of power. So, I think it is for that reason that people consume a lot of different media to stay informed but most of medias relay information that are not confidential. But the society want’s more and in my opinion, WikiLeaks carries out this role very well to reveal to society the secrets and the plots hidden by the authorities. So, I think that WikiLeaks is a good thing but like I have said before it had limits to be put. In order to prevent possible slippage that would go against the private life of people who hold the power. But not only for that because some other documents, files, e-mail etc must remain confidential for the security of people. For example, confidential files about some research against terrorism. So, to conclude Wikileaks is a good thing but it had some limits to be set.
Cordially,
Gauthier Lamart Reader of The Sydney Morning Herald g.lamart@sydnmail.au
