I’m going to present you my topic on the weed legalization in California.

I divided my talk into 3 sections

First, I’m going to talk about the cannabis benefits

After, I will enounce the cannabis harms

In a third time, I’m goin to talk about the history of Cannabis in California

And to conclude, you will see.

Cannabis benefits

I’m going to talk about the cannabis as a drug, not as a plant because I already got too much thing to say (about that).

So, the Cannabis is a psychoactive drug from the cannabis plant used for medical or recreational purposes.

The medical cannabis can be used to reduce nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy, to improve appetite (in people with VIH) and to treat chronic pain and muscles spams.

You can smoke, vaporize, eat and even drink it!

But even if you use it for medical effects, you will still be affected by the effects of the recreational cannabis, because that’s exactly the same plant.

Those effects include relaxation and euphoria, an altered state of mind, some distortions in the perception of time and space.

Some people use cannabis as an aid to meditation, as a spiritual experience, especially in the Rastafarian culture.

That is a big part of all the benefits of this (mysterious) plant.

Cannabis harms

Obviously, like all drugs or medication, there’s some adverse effects.

The effects of a short term use are not so dangerous except I you take too high doses, like become paranoid and do a panic attack or stuff like that.

It’s also really dangerous to smoke and drive because the cannabis impairs your short term memory and your motor coordination.

The effects of a long term use are really worst, it can be very destructive for the brain.

First, you can become an addict if you use it too much.

Your brain won’t develop itself properly, you can have some cognitive impairments, a lower I.Q and some mental problems or chronic psychosis disorders like schizophrenia or depersonalization.

History of cannabis in Cali

So now we know what the cannabis is and all his benefits and harms, we can start to talk about the history of cannabis in California.

The cannabis was cultivated for fiber and rope since 1795. Because yes, cannabis isn’t just a drug but when it’s use for fiber it’s called “hemp”.

The first cultivators of cannabis for recreational use there, where Arabs and Turks who were growing cannabis since 1895 to make local hashish.

20 years later, in 1915, the “poison act” was passed in all the country which made basically the cannabis illegal. I said basically because it’s not that simple.

Cannabis start to be very popular during the 60’s with the hippie movement.

There were a lot of proposition to legalize cannabis until 1996, the “proposition 215” a new Californian law allowing the use of cannabis was approved.
