Athletes salaries are a problematic subject. Different points of views discuss on the subject, some people think they are too much pay and other they deserve it. Some are even thinking that’s not enough for the performance them give.
The question is, are athletes really worth their salaries?
If we say things like they are, athletes are “only” playing in their discipline. But under this action, there is a lot of consequences. Indeed, today’s sport is a story of money, and not a lot of passion. Sponsors and coachs, drugs, all type of tricks are behind the athlete who is playing the game.
Sometimes, athletes win gold medal on events like Olympics Games. In Uzbekistan, the State give 811 000€ for this victory, surely because the gold medal give fame to the country. Tourists are more attract and when they come, country’s economy is better on a lot of points. Giving a big money amount is in the interest of the State. In United Kingdom, a gold medal return only 12 750€ to the athletes; this amount is for the right to one’s image, because stamps are create to the athlete’s effigy. We can also think the money giving for a gold medal depend of the economic situation of the country. Athletes must adapt themselves to those conditions.
The money they win can be used to buy a house or luxury elements raising their reputation. In our actual world, having a mark image in sport middle is necessary to be seen by important sponsors and coachs.
Athletes maybe not deserve to have this wage, but if they haven’t sport’s world will return to true passionate and not a lot of athletes will play in competitions. Is it a good issue? We can hardly say that, because today everybody know playing sport to a high level return a lot of money and it’s difficult to imagine a future without this condition.
From my point of view, athletes don’t deserve to have all this money for themselves, they should be obliged to give half of their fortunes to a worthy cause. But I think they can do nothing to change their salaries because all sport’s world is based on this system and when athletes arrived in this middle, they are immediately submerge in an important rapport with money. This rapport is a cause of today’s society and athletes can’t change that.
