Notion : Myths and Heroes

Introduction :

Today , I'm going to talk about the notion of “Myths and Heroes”, around the theme of athletes. First of all I would like to give a definition of this notion . Firstly, a Myth can be defined as a legend telling a story that sometimes cannot be verifed . A myth can be also defined as a story about gods or heroes, it can be a popular belief or a tradition or a false notion. So a myth can be based on real on unreal stories, which happened in the past. Secondly, the notion of “Hero” can fall into two categories. On the one, there are imaginary heroes with superpowers and who are in charge of saving the planet and the people in danger like Superman. On the other categories, there are real people who can have a role to play to change the world's history. It can be a heroes are demigods, in greek mythology or it can also defined as warriors or soldiers who go to the battlefield to fight for their country. Heroes can also be someone who's admired for his great achivements for contributing to the advancement of human history.

The question we can ask is “are sport people true heroes ?” In first place, we will study why we can say that they athletes are considered as heroes, then we will see why do disabled and minorities athletes deserve to be called heroes and finally we will see that the champions are not always considered as heroes.

I) why we can say that they athletes are considered as heroes

To begin, we can say that the greatest athletes of today are considered as heroes they should first of all respect the other participants and the judges, like any other kind of heroes, they tend to be courageous, strong and very determined to achieve their goals. They don't necessarily have to reach excellence, just to do as much as they can to overcome obsatcles. That way, we can consider them as models or like examples to follow. Young people have always considered high-level athletes to be exemplars because they embody excellence, discipline, transcendence, honesty. For example, the athlete Jesse Owens is considered same an hero because, he got a lot of discrimination because of his skin-couler, he was considered a second-class citizen, he was insulted and he received humiliation. That made it stronger, he broke three world records and Owens won four gold medals at the Olympics Games of Berlin in 1936. But Adolf Hitler expected to show the superiority of the Aryan Race to the world, and his success made Hitler choose to skip all medal presentations after the first day then he refused to shake Jesse Owen's hand. On balance, Owen's is one of the best strories in the history of the Olympics, he proved Hitler was wrong, and he symbolized the struggle of black American citizens for equality, and he was considered a hero by the black community.

We can also say that Tommie Smith and John Carlos are heroes, indeed During their medal ceremony at the Olympic stadium in Mexico City on October 16, 1968, two African American athletes each raised a black glove fist during the match against the American national. anthem. On the podium, Smith and Carlos, who won the gold and bronze medals respectively in the 200-meter event of the 1968 Summer Olympics, turned to the American flag and then raised their hands until the end of the hymn. They did this to show their support for the fight for civil rights despite the consequences it could have (could have been killed). They become real heroes thanks to their talent and also to their great courage. The demonstration is considered to be one of the most overtly political statements in the history of the modern Olympic Games.

II) why do disabled and minorities athletes deserve to be called heroes

We are now going to talk about disabled champions and minorities that we can deserve to call heroes. For the disabled, for example the Paralympic Games, it is a dream, they participate even with those who have visual problems, brain, without members. You have to stay positive despite their handicap, the games allow athletes to change their concept, when they are racing, they are no longer
