I am writing to you in relation to the above matter.
My case is listed for mention at the Alabama Local Court on Saturday 1 april 2017.
I would like to express my discontentment about the decision you took. As a matter of fact, you took the decision to expunge my criminal record in order to offer me a formal pardon because i was arrested under Jim Crow laws .Indeed, i was arrested in 1963 when i was protesting against these laws.
I ask that the court to review my case and not expunge my criminal record
AT first sight, i understand that my request is quite strange. On second thought, i want you to understand that my criminal record is not a burden for me as it could have been for others in my situation.
Actually, i don’,t want the court to take thos facts off my records ? I really don’t want to be pardoned, beacuse i did nothing which i could be pardoned for. All i was doing was demanding civil rights that i should have had as a human being and as a citizen of the United States of America. Me protesting against these laws ,which were embodying segreation, was one of the proudest moments in my life. Living under jim crow laws meant being separated from white people, not allowed to go to some places, not allowed to sit wherever we wqnted to sit. It was no life for citizens of America. By protesting against those laws, we have succeeded in abolishing them. IT cost us so much. In my opinion, taking my fact off my record would be an action that woul eraste and forget what i , and all the black community, did for our rights.
Thus, your honor i ask you to not expunge my criminal record.
Yours faithfully,
J. Smith
