The document is a cartoon. This painting is entitled “tsunami”. We don't know where this cartoon came from and we don’t know when it was published in. The catoonist signed at the bottom right but we don't have more information about him. The cartoon shows a giant wave hitting the statue of liberty.
We can notice that the statue of liberty seems alive on the right, she looks with big eyes and looks worriedly at the coming wave. On the wave on the left is written” 3 million illegal aliens per year” which means that 3 million immigrants arrive each year. At the top, the sky is very threatening, the weather is not good. In the distance the sea is flat. We can see the statue of liberty say “ Give me your tired,...Your poor..Your huddled masses yearning to..um..yearning to..” and in his thoughts utter an insult. At the bottom there is the title of the cartoon “tsunami”.
We can deduce the statue of liberty who represent the USA looks worriedly because the USA are not ready for the wave of immigrant who arrived and that's why Americans see immigrants as aliens. What makes the statue of liberty stammered which is saying its slogan. She says an insult because she is panicked. The sky announces bad news. The Statue of Liberty says it is ready to welcome all the misery in the world but it attracts a lot of immigrants. The cartoonist goal is probably to highlight the fact that the USA boasts of being a land of welcome when in reality they are afraid of the mass of immigrants who arrive every year.
I think this cartoon brilliantly illustrate the fear of the USA toward immigrants. Personally I found this cartoon very funny. 299 WORDS
