Part 1 : Jobs

1. The three situation are: when the visit is only in French or in English, often when it’s not July or August because most of the groups are not French so you need to speak in English with them. When foreigner don’t bring their own guide with them you also need to speak to them in English. There is more and more Chinese, Japanese or Russian and many other different nationality.

2.  Preparation of the visit:

- find about the group for adapt yourself to them

- many ways : get info, right order, practice and notes

- practice a lot and know your text but not read your notes in front of the group

- find out how the words should be pronounce

3. do prepare the way they said, makes notes, simply and clear, one or two key expression, not necessary to use difficult word, not read your notes

Part 2 :

1. Greet the group : Are you the group for (…) college ? Good morning everyone

2. Introduce yourself : My name’s Helen and I’m your guide for this morning visit

3. Say what you are going to show your group : We’re going to visit the grounds and the tiriere of the chateau

4. Ask people to do something (directing people) : So if you’d like to follow me we can start our visit

5. Attract people’s attention to something : Over there

6. Indicate exactly where something is :  If you look down there by the river, just next the river

Part 3 :

1 E-mail in French :  Bonjour, je suis Hélène, je suis la guide du Château. Mais malheureusement je suis dans l’incapacité de faire la visite au groupe de Vendredi matin en raison de problème de santé. Le groupe est composé de lycéens venant d’une école anglaise de 17 ans, ils étudient normalement tous l’Histoire. Ils arriveront Vendredi matin à 10 heure. Dans son e-mail, Claire présente ce que vous devrez faire : vous devrez présenter le château et son histoire, de sa construction jusqu’au 19ème siècle par exemple en parlant des grands escaliers entre autre ou encore de l’influence de la Renaissance italienne. Votre présentation devra faire au moins une heure. Elle vous demande aussi de l’appeler pour confirmer ou non votre venue, j’espère vraiment que vous accepterez.

2 E-mail in English : Hello Claire, I’m Helene, the regular guide for the Château Azay-Le-Rideau. I am so sorry that I can’t assure the visit of Friday morning ; I’m too sick for doing it. But after talking to Jean-Pascal, he said that he can do it instead of me. He know very well the story of the castle and he used to do the visit for English people. I think he’ll do a great job. I’m really sorry, and thank you.
