Brexit: the comeback from optimism
Discussions about Brexit may open up again between London and Brussels. Boris Johnson is attended by Jean-Claude Juncker (the Commission’s president) for a “working lunch” in Luxembourg on Monday the 16th. Indeed, 47 days before Brexit’s due date, Boris Johnson might consider the outlines of a deal. A compromise could be found around Ireland’s borders. The idea would be, as it was thought in 2017, to create a trade area between the North of Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, which by extension would mean the whole European Union. This backstop would prevent the Island to have a physical boundary. What was rejected by the British government was the idea of British backstop which would maintain the whole United Kingdom in a customs union with the EU. Since then, the government has learned to put some water in its wine. Indeed, Sammy Wilson (Democratic Union Party spokesman) said that they were willing to adopt an appropriate legislation if it was in the North Ireland’s economy’s interest. The control of products from the EU for Britain could be realized at the Irish See’s crossing. After the publication from an alarmist report, the consequences of a no deal are starting to give cold sweats to the executives in London and Dublin. In conclusion, a deal between the EU and the United Kingdom is more likely to happen than a few months ago. The latter could even happen before the 31st of October. It remains to be seen whether the British Parliament would be ready to ratify it or not.
