The U.S trade deficit with China was $419 billion in 2018. The trade deficit exists because U.S. exports to China were only $120 billion while imports from China were $540 billion.

The biggest categories of US imports from China were computers and accessories, cell phones, and apparel and footwear. A lot of these imports are from U.S. manufacturers that send raw materials to China for low-cost assembly. Once shipped back to the United States, they are considered imports.

China’s biggest import from America are commercial aircraft, soybeans, and autos. In 2018, China canceled its soybean imports after president Trump started a trade war. He imposes tariffs on Chinese steel exports and other goods.

Annual Trade Deficit

Since 2012, the U.S. trade deficit with China has increased. It was $315 billion in 2012, rose to $367.3 billion in 2015, then fell to $346.9 billion in 2015. In just two years, it's increased to $419.2 billion. The charts above show exports, imports, and the trade balance by year. The deficit from 2012 to 2013 was about 2 billion dollars, from 2013 to 2014 about 26 billion dollars, 2014 to 2015 it is almost the same amount about 26 million dollars.  Between 2016 and 2015 the default is 21 billion dollars, but between 2017 and 2016 the default increases to 29 billion dollars.  And again, between 2018 and 2017 the United States is experiencing a defect that reaches 44 billion dollars.
