Malgré tout, il reste gentleman et poli : p 16 "Its not good to eat alone" "Would you like to have a dinner with me tonight."
James Bond, commander of “the British Secret Service (Department)”, is a strong man with blue eyes and dark hair. He smokes a lot. He likes working alone. His code name is 007. His mission: prevent "The Figure" from obtaining 50 million francs.
Bond does not like working with the women, but he has to cooperate with Vesper. Nevertheless, this is a gentleman so he remains polite: “It’s not good to eat alone. He said to her. Would you like to have dinner with me tonight?” (P 16). Throughout the book the relations with Vesper evolve. So, later, he will fall in love with her: “I love her, he said to himself, and today, I’ll ask her to marry with me.” (P 61). He is hypocritical and even nasty, indeed at the end of the story, when Vesper passes away. Indeed, in his report to M, he speaks about Vesper as a bitch: “The bitch is dead now” (P 71).
Other changing fact in this narrative, first Bond is cold, selfish and obsessed by the success of the mission, up to the moment he rescues Vesper and it at the risk of making fail the mission. At this moment, he is a man with human feelings. But his heart becomes again a stone at the end of the story; he has no gratefulness for Vesper who commits suicide for him.
The secret agent 007, James Bond, strong, loyal, hard-working, voluntary has failings as everybody. His lack of humanity, of sensibility, makes this character unpleasant sometimes. On the one hand, I like very much the man, his values, his rigor, his will, his charisma, his success in his missions. On the other hand, the death of Vesper and the fact that James Bond remains a hard man give to this narrative a small sense of bitterness. In this story, there is a note of realism because. I enjoy very much that it does not end like in fairy tales…
