Firstly, I would like to thank Peace Corps for making me discover solidarity and hired me in the group.
What are Peace Corps?
The Peace Corps is an independent U.S. government agency, established in 1961 by Corps Volunteers work with governments, schools, health, business, information technology and ecology. They usually serve for periods of 27 months.
Officially, the program has three goals:
Helping people of interested countries
Help promote a better understanding of American culture by the inhabitants of the countries
Help promote a better understanding of the culture of these people by the American people.
Why would like to be a volunteer Peace Corps? Simply because it is important to help people but also because we do not know how much this is really helpful. I love being around people, I love helping people in need and share good times. Seeing people smile is the best reward I think. It takes many qualities to become Peace Corps; you have to listen to people, be brave and be patient.
You meet new people, which is not always easy because you have to adapt to a different standard of living.
I decided to work in the field of health and hygiene because I've worked in hospitals and I enjoyed. Health Program includes two project plans: Maternal and Child Health and hygiene. We study infant mortality, adverse living conditions and poor water quality.
We have three goals:
· Improve care and thus the conditions of maternal and child health;
· Increase a healthy water supply, and better community access to health services;
· Promote healthy hygiene and sanitation practices
When we arrived, we cleaned the school disinfected most things. It has some neat people; children were vaccinated against the disease. It was a long but very important work. They installed a small camp near the school where they work. This is not very practical, but it's enough.
I remember one time I had the opportunity to teach French, just a few words to the children. Since I love to sing and play the guitar, we invented a little song but my best memory is when a woman with AIDS, thanked me for helping her son to have vaccinated. See her smile and kindness allowed me to tell me it was a good thing for me to help others.
Thanks to Peace Corps, I learned to help and be patient. I also got to chat with different people from me. I also learned to enjoy life. I think we do not need much to be happy. These people had nothing but their families, and do not complain.
