Our man in Havana

Our Man in Havana, a novel written by Graham Greene, is a book about the story of an English man living in Havana who gets involved in a secret organization to get more money but things get complicated along the way. This book is interesting because of its characters who make us laugh, the main themes and hidden messages behind the text.

In Our Man in Havana, characters are quite original. For example, Mr. Worlmold, the protagonist of the story has a surprisingly humoristic imagination that he uses for his reports to the Secret Organization. “The machine” was not discovered but invented by him. He was inspired from a vacuum cleaner. What’s even funnier is the way the Chief of the Secret Organization believed it. They totally thought it was real! Next is Mr. Hasselbacher, a doctor who suggests Mr. Wormold to use his imagination for his reports. He has a mysterious past, but later on, we discover that he was a soldier for the First World War. He became a doctor to amend his mistake from having killed a man during the war.

One of the themes in the book is loyalty. He has to make a decision between caring about his family or giving information to the Secret Organization. He loves his daughter so much that when he is offered the chance to give her what she needs, he accepts the to do what the stranger wants him to do. This way is also a way to have some money. He loves so much Doctor Hasselbacher that as revenge, he kills Carter, the one who shot Hasselbacher. This proves that he is loyal to his close friend.
