LELE / ESCAPE EXILE WANDERING

Definition :

-The notion of escape, exile, wandering :

->escaping is becoming free from something

->someone who exiles leaves the country where he was born

->wandering means walking and moving without a purpose

Question :

The question we’ll try to respond to is “How exile permits self-discovery ?”

        A/Decision-making is already about self-discovery

        B/ Exile itself is a way to reconnect with yourself

Choosing to leave or not (dilemna) may permits to discover your real temper

Treasure island : At first Jim wasn’t ready to leave or at least notified but he understood he should leave. We understand he can adapt.

He’s also greed.

Eveline : As she decided not to leave, she gave up = it represents her symbolic death

-> “Her white face” = corpse, lifeless body

-> Flashbacks (analepses) helps to feel what she feels 

-> Stream of consciousness also helps = a kind of narration that describes happenings in the flow of thoughts in the minds of the characters

Ida : All the social rules she broke by leaving her house represent her bravery/ courage

->She had an Epiphany about he arranged marriage she won’t accept

->She lives in a microcosm where woman aren’t considered as humans “Women always become their mothers”

These values had been discovered by the decision-making.

Travelling is a metaphor to symbolize the research of yourself.

B/ Exile itself is a way to reconnect with yourself

Treasure Island : Before he left, he was reasonable, prudent. Whereas the trip was full of new experiences to him : he took many decisions. His choices saved the ship crew more than once.

Ida : She broke free from control by leaving. It’s a new start, permits to begin a new life

She would become as her grandmother, the only independent woman she knows. From now she can respect her values and herself, although her culture wouldn’t.
