The first pages are a story described by an inside narrator. Before he even talks about himself at the first person, and describes his relationship with the main character, we as readers can feel that’s his inside. He gives a portrait of Miss pulkinhorn that feels like he has known her, and is holding feelings against her. We can say that there are two characterizations made by dressing one negativ portrait : the one of Pulkinhorn, really interesting because it’s done by the point of view of Sir Edward. We sense to that point that both will be essential to the story.

The narrator refuses to give to the reader any information about time or space. Il en ressort un décors flou, qui semble mystérieux, voire fantastique. Ce cadre est lié au champ lexical religieux, notamment en rapport avec la description du temps (first page : « time ceases to be a dimension »).

« desperately poor » : but kept up appearances by living in a « huge wreck » of a house

has a way of going swepping arount the cathedral, described with irony by the narrator as « Miss pulkinhorn’s tour of the estate » (end P100)

have some honorary position that « gave her the chance to direct the future behaviour of fallen woman » (debut page 101)

page 102, indirect caracterization « so much bigotary and ignorance/ miwed up with jealousy »

her public and privet opinions are not the same : example page 102 : she disapprove publicly, and hate privetly

at the begining of page 103 : « the tree of their relationship grew » (her and « he », her miracle)

Canonized (got a knighthood)

in relation with miss Pulkinhorn (describes his development in parallel of knowing her)

ironic (lignes 15 og page 1)

has « music and glass as a hobby »

his evolution is described very clearly, from past to present we he says « I was a cheerful young man with a tendency to irregularities. » then, « When it ended, position and respectability lay on me like the dust on the tombs ». Here, maybe to metaphor of death used to describe his responsabilities foreshadow that something bad is about to happen.

Rlly doesn’t like miss pulkinhorn, makes fun and express doubting her responsability by ironizing « poor things » (debut page 101), about the women she seems to be in charge of
