The Tell-Tale Heart – EDGAR ALLAN POE

CONTEXTE: The Tell-Tale Heart" is a short story by American writer Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1843. It is relayed by an unnamed narrator who endeavors to convince the reader of the narrator’s sanity while simultaneously describing a murder he committed. The victim was an old man with a filmy "vulture-eye", as the narrator calls it. The narrator emphasizes the careful calculation of the murder, attempting the perfect crime, complete with dismembering and hiding the body under the floorboards. Ultimately, the narrator's feelings of guilt, or a mental disturbance, result in hearing a thumping sound, which the narrator interprets as the dead man's beating heart. ACCORDING TO WIKIPEDIA

Was there a passage in that essay that you thought was interesting?

The most interesting passage in The Tell-Tale Heart was for me when the police officers were sitting with the person who dismembered the old guy. It was incredible to read how much he was stressing about the officers discovering the truth without even searching. I thought I was in the scene when I read this essay.

Something that made you think about literature in a different way?

When I discovered that Poe was considered of the person who create the detective story and the horror and science fiction story, I was shocked. I didn’t know that my favorite genre of literature, the horror genre, was developed in 1843, I thought it was before.
