BORN IN DAMASCUS
review
On November 22, I watched nine shorts films from the this is England Festival. Among the nine short films, my favorite is « Born in Damascus » directed by Laura Wadha and produced by Charlotte Hailstone.
This is the story of Laura, a woman who decides to watch old videos of herself when she was in Syria. We see her with her cousin, but also with her family. Therefore, Laura tries to join her cousin by facetime.they were very happy to see each other because the last time was 10 years ago. Laura offers her cousin to watch the videos of their life that they both have no memories of. Over the videos they can perceive some memories but very few. They are very nostalgic and fear that they may never see their Syrian family again. Looking back at the Facebook conversations, we see that she had to separate from her Syrian family because of the war. Many explosions took place during the exchanges with her cousin. they weren't sure they could stay alive. Today, they must rebuild their lives in a new country, with some difficulties of adaptation.
Originally, she was filming videos of damascus for her friends, but today, these videos are the only memory she has of her last trip in Syria.
-During most of the film we see images of damascus. the quality of the old videos and the quality of the sound accentuates the seniority of the videos.
-Besides, the soundtrack is bad because the whole movie is on the computer. This clearly shows that Laura's only memories are on her computer and she no longer has any material memories.
-Moreover, heavy background music in the images of the beginning makes us quite sad and we feel the emotions of laura.
-We often have wide shots because in the film we have to insist on the background: the most important are the images of the city of laura.
-We learned about the consequences of different conflicts in other countries. In addition, we learn about Syrian culture and the history of Syria. this film taught me things about my origin, because I am Syrian
I really liked this short film because it is really interesting and we learn about something important and I think we don't talk about it enough. Moreover, the film is very touching in my opinion
So, in conclusion, I would say that “Born in damascus” is the best short film, because it talks about an important subject. special effects accentuates the ideas and emotions of the film. I recommend this film.
-we can find a little moral conclusion to this short film. We don't know what can happen in life so you have to enjoy your family and your life (but don't forget to work at school of course :)
