I was raised by two business owners and globe-trotters who gave me the opportunity to travel a lot. Indeed, my family is split between France, Belgium, Germany, soon Mexico and, I hope, the United Kingdom. My parents also taught me the fundamentals of economics and the importance for individuals from different countries to trade with each other. This led me to study economics and social sciences in high school, and it is also why I want to pursue a degree in international management in the UK. Additionally, I am passionate about the fashion and luxury industries. Getting formal training in business will allow me to later study for a master’s degree in luxury brand management.
My family is very open-minded, which gave me a natural ability to communicate with – and listen to – others. Moreover, my extra-curricular activities, like playing American football, kitesurfing and scouting, helped me develop relational intelligence. Indeed, when I am on a football field, I have to be aware of my teammates’ and rivals’ signals to quickly implement a winning strategy, while maintaining group cohesion and using fear of failure as a motivator. Also, even though kitesurfing is an individual sport, kite surfers form a big family in which every member takes care of others and shares information to keep everyone safe. The same can be said of a scout troop. In my opinion, one of the foundation blocks of good management is communication. To communicate, it is important to listen to others, to make an honest effort to truly understand them and their intentions, so as to determine how their contribution to a project could add value to a business. These are skills that I am eager to refine through an international management degree program.
My education has pushed me to cultivate myself and do personal research about a variety of topics. I read a lot, especially about businesspeople and self-made men like Phil Knight or Steve Jobs. Through their biographies, I became aware of the amount of hard work they put into their companies in order to turn them into global brands. I have also done a lot of research about important businesspeople from my native region, the North of France, including the Mulliez Family and Bernard Arnault. Their ability to succeed in the hyper-competitive retail and luxury sectors is admirable. I also enjoy reading about economic news, as well as the fashion and luxury sectors. I think that being curious, cultivated and aware of the news is key to be a good manager, especially in a field like fashion, where everything changes so fast in the era of social media.
Because of my passion for streetwear and sneakers, I have developed an ability to discover young brands with enormous potential, like Aime Leon Dore or Arte Antwerp, that are now growing and making a name for themselves in the closed circle of hype brands. I also started to develop my own network in this field, talking with several creative directors and concept store owners. Through these contacts, I have managed to obtain pre-release access to a few collections, as well as reliable inventory information. As a result, I have been fairly successful buying and selling sneakers on a platform called Stock X, which is essentially a stock exchange for shoes, with sellers and buyers located all around the world. On Stock X, one can follow price changes for different pairs of shoes, then make money selling a pair from their inventory at the highest possible price. This experience helped me learn the business game, doing everything to maximize profits and minimizing overhead, like expedition costs.
