              Un temps du passé : le prétérit progressif

                                                                                     be+ verbe+ ing

        Le prétérit  progressif sert à parler du passé. Il se conjugue avec:                                       auxilliaire BE au prétérit simple suivi de la base du verbe+ ing. 

    Attention! Le marqueur de la négation et de l'interrogation n'est plus did.!

          Le prétérit progressif  est identique pour les verbes réguliers et irréguliers  mais tous les verbes ne permettent pas cette conjugaison.

                                   ex    to walk (régulier)

  forme affirmative    forme négative   forme interrogative  

    I   was walking                 I wasn't working           Was I  working    ?

 You were walking            You wern't working          Were you working?

   He was  walking             He wasn't working          Was he working   ?

  We were  walking            we wern't  working         Were we working ?

  They were walking          They  wern't working      Were they working ?  

                                               ex    to go (irrégulier)

      I was going                      I wasn't going               Was I going ?

  You were going                You wern't going             Were you going ?

    He was going                  He wasn't going              Was he  going ?

    We were going               We weren't going             Were we going ?

   They were going              They wern'tgoing             Were they going ?
