How does fashion define a society ?

After the second world war, the Economy starts up again in the country and allowed population's enrichment. But until the sixties, the fashion was reserved for the elite with haute couture. The sixties had an important impact on the fashion and the society, that's the reason why we will particularly speak about this period.

Thanks to the apparition of consumer's society, the fashion is not reserved anymore to a specific social class but to everyone. Indeed, the mass production allowed to develop the ready-to-wear clothes, which allowed the apparition of fashion trades with for example Promostyl and Pecleres. Now, the clothes are simplified and standardized. The use of synthetic material rises.

We will now come on to the second point, the independence of the woman. Thanks to their important role during the second world war, women want to become emancipated and this has an impact on the fashion. Indeed, during the sixties women wear trousers popularized by Yves St Laurent. Skirt become shorter and the miniskirt even become a symbol of the women's emancipation.

The political fad for spatial conquest has influenced the fashion. In 1964, André Courrèges created a collection named “Space Age”, which presented refined garment with geometrical shapes. This fashion is accentuated when Neil Armstrong walks on the moon for the first time in 1969. The spatial conquest stayed a strong thematic clothes' collection in the course of time. Travel in stars stays an important dream because it's not accessible for everyone.
