The punk movement is a musical movement that appeared at the end of the 1960s in the United States, before expanding in Great Britain and then around the world. It came from young amateur musicians who made music with electric guitars in their garage and demanded the accessibility of music for all. Then, in the 1970s, this movement became a musical revolution, a protest movement that denounced a society going through an economic and social crisis. Punks express their rage and desire for change through short and aggressive songs. The famous slogans "Anarchy" or "No future" symbolize the despair of this youth who revolts.
Punks are showing their passion for the movement with their clothes and their attitudes. They want to shock as much with their music than with their style. The punk spirit is aggressive and confrontational. This movement is very controversial because punks take risks and fight for their rights with anger. But they are also independent and free. They follow the "do it yourself" philosophy and make everything themselves: their music, their actions, their clothes... Punks refuse fashion codes and can dress as they like without being judged. They are wearing black clothes, destroyed or hobnailed and monkey boots. They have piercings, tattoos and strange haircuts like colorful spiked Mohican.
Today, even though punk music is still played at festivals like Hellfest, the movement is not as present as it used to be. However, the punk movement has greatly influenced the music. It created other musical styles such as pop-punk, punk-hardcore or emo. Moreover punk style is always fashionable. Nowadays, designers like Jean Paul Gauthier are inspired by punk fashion in their creations. The punks are always there to remind us that they are still alive and that they are still fighting. For example, the Sex Pistols recently burned $5 million worth of artwork to protest the fact that punk music is becoming a marketing tool. Society still needs the punk spirit to shake it up and there will always be people willing to revolt to change things. So don't forget: "Punk is not dead".
