        Myths and Heroes Writing

Hello, today I am going to talk about myths and heroes. First of all we have to know what this terms are. According to the dictionary, a myth is a traditional story, usually concerning the history of a people or explaining a phenomenon and typically involving supernatural beings or events. In these narratives it commonly appears a hero: its a person who is admired for having done something very brave or has special abilities and qualities. I am going to focus on myths in the society, so I will answer the question: “Does the society need myths?”

Firstly I will show why they were important some centuries ago, and then in our time.

Myths and legends have existed for centuries. Each culture has different, and in general they  intend to transmit a message, a life lesson to whoever reads the story. Many of the things that appear in myths can be applied in our lives, because we all want to be a better version of us. Every history has a meaning, they are not just fantastic stories. In ancient Greece, stories about gods, goddesses, heroes and monsters were an important part of everyday life. They explained everything from religious rituals to climate, and gave meaning to the world. Today, some of that stories can help us remember what is important, to prevent us from behaviors, and to teach us what really matters in life. Now I am going to show you an example. The term “narcissist” originates from a myth of Greece. The story of Narciso tells that a handsome man fell in love with his own reflection. He always rejected people who wanted to have his affections, even there were persons who commit suicide to prove his love. The goddess of love heard this, and Narciso was punished with a love that would never be satisfied. And he fell in love with his own reflection. So one day, when he tried to kiss his reflection on the river, he falls in, and he died. The lesson is that you have to be kind to others, to be open minded to the love of others and that appearances are not everything. Also that you don’t need to be obsess of your look, but to focus on what is inside you and other.

To resume, myths were told to people and it helped them realize the difference between right and wrong. They also became the perfect way to impart lessons without being boring.

By the way, myths and legends are not history but they are part of history. They would be common to all cultures and in each region they adapt the history in one way or in another, depending on the cultural heritage, but always with a common base. For example in Spain, there is a mythological dragon called Cuélebre, which can be compared to the Nordic dragon. The only difference is that Cuélebre is associated with the treasures it guards, and the Nordic dragon is associated with malefic magic and forces. The human, even if the time pass, is still curious about the stories. It can be explained by the fact that people want that fantasy in their lives. And because they want to know that part of their culture, of their past and of their roots. For example, they help to know the origins of some Holidays . We have the romantic legend of the Lovers of Teruel. It goes back to the Middle Ages, when two young people of Teruel , Isabel de Segura and Diego de Marcilla, died for love after some reasons  that didn’t let them being together. Their bodies rest together in a mausoleum next to a church. It was declared a “World Heritage Site” by UNESCO. The city of Aragon remembers this story every year. People come disguised in medieval costumes, and the town recreate the atmosphere of that time.
