SPACE AND EXCHANGES

This year, in English lessons we studied four notions. I will speak about the notion Space and Exchanges. In English lessons we have studied about the immigration.

So, we can question about this notion:

What is the origins and impacts of Immigration?

I- The grass is greener / Dividing lines

Let me begin by defining the notion of border. Border are not statics. Many people think that is better somewhere else. Many people want escape or just leave their country ans try to cross borders. But these borders may change. Historic events may account for these change. There are different reasons for leaving a country for example the war, the immigrants will a better life . In English lessons we studied the different waves of immigration from 1607 till 1960. Sometimes the man imposes borders for example in Germany with the Berlin Wall. I remember a photo that we saw in English lessons: we saw 2 women holding 2 flags standing in front of the checkpoint. It was the day commemorating the fall of the Berlin wall. This wall was erected by the Germans to prevent people from fleeing to the west. There is other wall for example the Belfast wall that used to separate the catholics from the protestants . The immigrants leave their country because of wars and persecution. We have listen in English lessons a document about the refugees. A refugee is a person who flee their country and cross a border for different reasons: race, religion, political opinion... In the world there are over 10 millions refugees. It is difficult for these person to getting some documents: some of them are undocumented.

II- Living together

After to study the origins of immigration, we can study the impact and how are lived these exchanges.

In English lessons we read a document about immigrants who came to Ellis Island. This immigrants came from Italy and Eastern Europe to go to Ellis Island. The narrator explain that the immigrants were considered the same as animals, cattle, not as human beings. The immigrants did not have the same culture as the New-Yorkers, so they weren't accepted. When they arrived in Ellis Island, they were filthy, they had running sores. The immigrants lost their identity.

The immigrants are not accepted by the people. It is difficult for the immigrants to take a place in the society.
