Scene 1:

Narrator: Our story begins in the early 17th century. You may think that the first european people to travel to Australia were British, but they were actually Dutch. Captain Willem Janszoon and his crew sailed along the North Coast of the current Queensland in a trip back from New Zealand. However, they didn’t settle there, let’s say they were too lazy to disembark, and they just did some cartography.

Willen: Zie je daar iets, Jenkins? Jenkins: Niet een beetje land, mijn aanvoerder. Narrator: Well, we know that you may not understand dutch, so we have translated the dutch speech to english for you. You’re welcome. Willen: Do you see anything out there, Jenkins? Jenkins: Not a bit of land, my captain. Willen: Keep looking, we might discover something big here. Jenkins (after a pause) Oh! Look there, captain! Willen: What is it, boy? Jenkins: It’s land! Seems to be quite big too! Willen: (taking binoculars) Let me see that!... Yes, it seems to be quite big! Jenkins : Should I tell the boys to turn to starboard? Willen: Let’s sail the coast for now, and call the cartographer. Jenkins: Yes, sir. ...How are you going to call this new land? Willen: Great point, Jenkins. How about... “New Holland”? Jenkins: Very original my captain (End of Scene 1)
