Charlie Chaplin

PRESENTATION

Charlie Chaplin was an English man, and an international famous comic actor and a film director. His real name was Charles Spencer Chaplin Junior and he was born in 1889 in London. He died on Christmas Day in 1977.

He grew up in a modest family, and has a difficult and sad childhood with his brothers, who will inspire him in his film during all his career. He did his first appearance on the stage at the age of 5. During his teenage years, Charlie Chaplin chained contracts, and theater troups but his career in cinema really began when he obtained his contract with Keystone studio. Charlie became himself a director.

CHAPLIN AS AN ARTIST

Chaplin was a comic actor and film director. Before the end of the first World War he was already one of the best known film star. His speciality was silent films where he used mimes and other visual comedu routins. However he realized somes films where there were speaking language such as The Great Dictator in 1940. The biggest part of this films were successful, and until the beginning of his career, everyone knew him and appreciated his work.

He created his own character, Charlot, a funny tramp. In all his film Charlot keep the same custom, which became a symbol. Through this character. Chaplin knew how to make spectator's laugh, and was associated to this character in the whole world.

He revolutionised cinema, he managed to innovate the cinema's world which wasn't usual at this time. All his films stood out of all classical film styles during this years.

Chaplin was also a good dancer, and usually used music to dance in his films which made him rewarded: he received the Oscar for Best Original films songs. By this way, he created a new dance style, which mixed mimes and dance steps.

He played in eighty movies and used more than seventy times the character of Charlot, which represents a fifty years career.

PERSONALITY, QUALITIES

A big personality like Charlie Chaplin wasn't afraid by the idea of criticizing powerful people such as Hitler for example, and he always wanted to pass a message in his films to defend his convictions. He was a courageous and involved person. Furthermore, Chaplin knew how to attract people and make his films popular thanks to his big humour that he always used in movies. He managed to make laugh a all generation. Elsewhere, nowadays famous singers speak about him, such as Ben l'Oncle Soul who quotes Charlie Chaplin in his song and qualifies him a Superhero.

He was one of the most creative and influential personalities. His socialist political opinions made him seen like he was a revolutionary and he has been arrested by the FBI but to his mind, he was just a "world citizen".

MY OPINION

I have chosen to talk about him as he was honorable. Charlie Chaplin was a good man, with a big heart and that's why he received the international price for peace in 1954 (nineteen fifty four).
