Synthèse Anglais :             Notion of Pogress

First of all, I’m going to speak about the notion of progress.

The progress refers to the fact of something going forward towards an advanced or improved version of itself. Along history, great progress encountered most of the time significant opposition because some people weren’t comfortable with the great changes they involved, which can make us ask ourselves : is progress always a good thing ? I’ll show you in a first part that progress can have negatives views. Then, in a second part, I will show how the progress had change some aspects of the society.

In first place, we can see that progress is not always a positive development. In fact, we can speak about the technological progress.

Technological advances of the last decades completely changed and reshaped the world we know today. The progression of internet and smartphones are transforming lives and human relationships in totally unprecedented ways.According to a CNN report from 2015 (an American news channel), teenagers spend up to 9 hours a day using media through their computers, Tvs or smartphones.

Then, we can also show that progress in not always synonymous of positivity with the example of the scientific progress.

Scientific progress might be the best known because of it’s direct impact on the improvement of human life. We owe it medicine, vaccination, and so many discoveries about our world. But could there be a point were progress come too far ? What should be the importance given to ethics? In 2000, Adam Nash was born in the US as the first «savior sibling». A savior sibling is «A child concieved through selective in vitro fertilization as a potential source of donor organs or cells for an existing brother or sister with a life-threatening medical condition». The intention of wanting to save a child is more than understandable, but does that mean that it’s acceptable to concieve a second child for the sole purpose of saving the first one on the account of its genes ?

Finally, the progress can have a positive impact in the social sector.

We can admire the evolution of the women’s place in the society thanks to the example of Disney’s movies. In fact, Cinderella’s story told us that Cinderella, as all womens wanted to get married to a prince charming. However, her cruel stepmother confined her at home and she has no choice but to do the housework. The eponymous film was released in 1950, and although women’s contribution played a major role in WWII, it was still common at that time to argue that women were meant to be housewives who remained at home to clean and raise children. This is show how womens was seen by mens and the society. Snow White or Sleeping Beauty are others examples which illustrate this case. Over the last few years, Disney went a step further and created female characters that were much more rounded and stronger. In 2009, Disney released The Princess and the Frog, involving for the first time an African American princess. The film takes place in 1912 in the United States. At that time, women have not had the right to vote yet. However, in the film, Tiana is portrayed as a hard worker who wants economic independence. In a sense, she wants to earn her dreams. In Rapunzel or in the movie « In Brave », we can also see examples of independent’s womens.
