The idea of progess

Today I will present the notion of idea of progress. We can define the notion of idea of progress as an improvement, a development or a change whether it is technical, scientific or social advance which contributes to making the world a better place. In order to understand better and illustrate this definition I choose as example India. These  last few years India made the experience of an increasing cultural and social development. However every progress or changes of a society create debates and paradoxes as what happen in this country.

To what extent in spite of its social evolution India is still attached to the traditional values of its country ?

To answer this question I have chosen to focus my remarks on the textes «India's girls go missing»  and «Is microcredit changing India ?». To illustrate my thought I will use data given by various graphs and charts  which are named «A country on the march». My fourth set of document is «The kigdom of dreams».

In a first part I will present aspects of modern-day India and in an other part the more traditional aspects of this country to be able to compare them.

Many changes have occured in India over the last 30 years. The country is now in a process of rapid economic development. India has a very important Gross Domestic Product GDP : about 7 or 8 percent per year. Even though a lot of Indians are very poor, India's economy is currently changing rapidly. In India, the concept of microcredit seems to have changing the country. This system consists in granting small loans to people who can't get loans from traditional banks because they are too poor. Microcredit has enabled many Indian people, even the women and the Dalits (or the Untouchables), to start their own enterprise. It contributes to Indian economic expansion and has even been helped some poor people and their families to extricate themselves from poverty.

The poverty seems to have been progressively falling in India. Indeed, in 1981, 60% Indian people were living below 1 € a day whereas around 20 years later, in 2005, they were 42%. Moreover, a very strong middle class is emerging in India, which is a sign of improvement of Indian livings conditions.

India can be considered as a moderne country to the extent that it try to spread culture Gully all over the world. The Kingdom of dreams is an example of this. It's India's first live entertainment  which contributes to make know traditions by keeping folklore alived. One of boulevard of Kingdom of dream is dedicated to culture Gully, their cuisines, arts and architecture. However in several fields the progress still can be made.

Inequalities between men and women are very present in this country.Womens in India suffer from a male dominated society, the girls are regarded as second-class citizens. In India, the family has to pay a dowry for the weddings that's why there is many infanticides in India.Consequently, Indian families are desperate for sons as they are financially far more attractive and each family wants to have a son at least, because he could look after the family business, who can look after the family name and who can look after the parents when they are old. This problematic situation resulting in a rising number of gender selected abortions.   Baby girls are killed because they are a burden even if the government had been trying to stop gendercide. Sex-selective abortions and finding out the sex of a baby before birth had been becoming illegal.
