LIEUX ET FORMES DE POUVOIR

I am going to talk about the notion of places and forms of power and more precisely places where power was imposed on its inhabitants. First of all I would like to give a definition of every keywords. “Places” could be important buildings or institutions which represent a certain form of power or a symbol of power.The “power” is the ability or capacity to exercise control, and authority. It can be also a person, a group or a nation having great influence or control over others. There can be good or bad types of power and in this notion there are a division between people who have power and people who suffer the power, which are controlled or influenced.

In order to illustrate this notion, I have chosen two documents :

The first one is a song entitled « Sunday Bloody Sunday », sung by U2.

And the second one is an audio extract entitled «What is the Irish Republican Army »

These documents will help us answer the following question : Is violence necessary to break free ?

I will use the sample of the Irish history to witness the different forms of places and power. Ireland lived a very conflictual period, based on violence. The bloody Sunday illustrates this with the open fire during a pacifist demonstration of unarmed catholic people.

The first document is a song entitled « Sunday, Bloody Sunday » and sung by the rock band U2. It’s refers to this incident, near Belfast in Northern Ireland in 1972. For an unknown reason, the Northern Irish police opened fire. 26 people were shot, among them, children and teenagers. It started a period of intense tension in Northern Ireland called « The Troubles ». In this song, U2 denounces the violence in the country. The drums echo a military step or gunshots. The lexical field of war, death and violence is omnipresent. Like bodies, bloody, bloodshot eyes, die..

The second document is about the Irish Republican Army. The Republican group volunteers, which later became the IRA wanted a free Northern Ireland. It’s a terrorist group helped by the Republic of Ireland. There is a relationship between these two documents because when the song was released, U2 was accused of siding with the IRA. This document shows that in may 2015, an ex-IRA commander was murdered on the street, followed by several IRA bombings. This violence signals that is not yet over.

In both documents, the violence of the Irish History is put forward.

I have the feeling that it’s better to negotiate before opening fire. I agree with the idea that violence must be the last alternative to resolve problems. We mustn’t forget that most of the time, violence leads to the beginning of a war. Faced with such an awful situation, the Irish started to emigrate to America.
