Idea of Progress

I’m going to talk about the notion of “Idea of Progress”. To start with, I would like to give the definition of this notion. The idea of progress can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change, a technical, scientific or social advance which contributes to making the world a better place.

We may wonder if surrogacy  can be considered as a progress?

My presentation will fall into 2 parts :

First, we will see that surrogate mother is a medical and social progress, then we will see that it still be poorly considered in many countries in the world.

Surrogacy is a progress in today’s world.

In class, we read a text about an indian woman Sarita who wants to become a surrogate mother.  Becoming a surrogate can help her to earn money to have a better future for her and her family. This document makes us understand that it’s a solution to escape poverty, in India, or other poor countries. Moreover, the couple who wants the baby, follow Sarita’s pregnancy so they are sure that the baby will be safe.

We listened to a recording which shows that many people are for surrogacy; for many reasons like helping a family to have children. One person thinks that it is a modern way  to have a child, those who don’t accept it are narrow-minded.

We also see, the case of a sterile couple who wanted to have twins, and too old to adopt a kid.  So they ask two women to be surrogates at the same time. The two women were happy to help this couple in difficulty, and they can have babies.

Surrogacy still be poorly considered by many people, and it’s prohibited in many countries especially in Europe.

For Sarita, previously evocated, her choice is  judged by her village because in India, they don’t have the same attitudes toward sex and the family. So surrogates could be excluded and ostracized. So Sarita was afraid of what people might say.

in the recording they denounce surrogacy because, for women it’s the best solution for having a child if you can’t adopt. For a man, the worst  problem is the relationship between the babies born of a surrogate mother and the surrogate mother other babies. A woman  wonders what happens if the baby doesn’t correspond to the parents’ expectations. Because there is no after-sales department.

Furthermore, I saw a movie called Liouba, it’s an episode of the french serie ‘Joséphine ange gardien’. A young woman wanted to become a surrogate mother, but finally when the baby was born, she wanted to keep it. Because a relation is created between the baby and the surrogate mother.

To conclude, the medicine progress have allowed some sterile couple the possibilities to have a baby. However, surrogate mothers are prohibited in some countries like France or Italy, because it call into question the notion of family.

For my point of view, it’s good for the women who need money to survive. But, i think that the link created with the baby is too strong to let him go and live with another family.
