Spaces and exchanges
I'm going to talk about the notion Spaces and exchanges. To begin with, I'd like to give a definition of it. The different spaces of the world are nowadays more and more connected to each other. The exchanges can appear on many forms: people, trade, information . The immigration is linked to this notion as it implies the motion of legal and illegal people to other countries and it often involves the disillusion of a dream. Due to globalization, people are moving a lot today. The reasons are numerous and varied: political, economic, cultural, ... Some try to do and escape poverty. Other adventure, try to discover the world. Most do their job. Such as mobility to increase trade between countries. There may be goods, money or ideas ... and that has always been the case. We will focus on, firstly, the struggles and challenges of the migrants and then on the paradox of modernity, concluding with the question of globalization .
Do human mobility and globalization open new persepectives or cause more struggles and challenges for the migrants
First, I will take an interest in the struggles and challenges faced by migrants. Since its origin the USA has always been a place of immigration, the main reason was the American dream, when people had hopes for what was a new and largely unexplored continent to European immigrants. People dreamt of owning land and establishing a prosperous business in hopes this would make them happy. They were also looking for a place of freedom, wealth, religious tolerance, without political oppression and economic hardship that was occurring in their native country. In my opinon, the document that seems to best illustrate this argument would be the article "What is today's American Dream ?" written by Katty Kay, published in the BBC news. It's about the stereotype of the national psyche, she interviews people who have migrated to America, their expectations and their present feelings. A 18-year-old girl says, for instance : " I thought this is not America because this is not what I see on television." Therefore, we can see that the American dream will remain a myth for her, as for most people. Indeed, the old myth made people have illusion on the fact to get married, have two children and live in a three-bedroom traditional home. Rather than looking for great wealth or success, people hope to avoid poverty or loneliness. Otherwise, with regard to economic factors, migrants are faced with low-paid jobs that do not require special skills. There is a form of enslavement, in the case of illegal immigrants, it is indeed exploitation of workers. Moreover, the cartoon of Joe Heller, which is called "the other side of the coin", illustrates precisely my purpose. We see immigrants performing unpleasant jobs, because it is difficult working conditions such as heat or dirt. Furthermore, the artist conveys as a message that the works that the "natives" of the country do not want to do, are attributed to immigrants and especially illegal immigrants. As the document tells us, difficult jobs, mostly manual, are reserved for immigrants because they have no choice but to accept. Indeed, these people are without money and are satisfied with the first work that is offered to them that can not remain homeless, without being reluctant to accept them, without considering the working conditions, the difficulty of the latter and their salary often minimized.
