Auteur : Leon Leyson is the youngest Jewish boy rescued from the Nazi gas chambers by Oskar Schindler. He told his incredible story for the first time in "The boy on the wooden box".

Born in Poland, he was the fifth child of a working-class family. When the Leysons were locked up in the Krakow ghetto, the German industrialist Oskar Schindler decided to save them from hiring Jews, including Leon's father and brother. Imprisoned in the Plaszow camp, the young boy is not on the list. He thinks he is lost but manages to convince the person responsible for the transfer of the prisoners to the arms factory that his name was mistakenly blocked. The soldier eventually gave in, Leon joined the factory. It is so small that it has to climb on wooden crates to reach the machines... Schindler became attached to the child and took enormous risks to spare him Auschwitz.

Leon Leyson emigrated to the United States after the war and taught for nearly forty years in California. He had hardly ever told his story until the worldwide success of Steven Spielberg's film, "Schindler's List", in 1993.

Oskar Schindler, a German industrialist who is a member of the Nazi party, manages to save the hundreds of Jewish workers who work at his enamel factory in Krakow from the Holocaust. Entering Poland with German troops, Schindler managed to save 800 men and 300 women from certain death at the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp, by having them work in his new weapons factory.

Résumé : While everything seems lost for Leon Leyson, deported at the age of twelve to a concentration camp, a man - a Nazi - gives him hope. By employing him as a factory worker, Oskar Schindler made little Leon the youngest on his list. A list that will mean life for him but also for hundreds of other Jews caught in the nets. The history is very upsetting, there are good and bad twists.

Evaluation: The writing is very touching and creepy by the story. Thanks to my reading I discover Oskar schindler and what he did during the second world war.

Liked: because I really like the novels of that time because they help me to better understand history and to see it from another point of view
