The Handmaid's Tale review.

Answer to the question : What sort of society is evoked in your book?

The Handmaid's Tale was written in 1985 by Margaret Atwood, it evokes a dystopian society.

Religion has taken a lot of place in the society and it forces women to obey because they fear their oppressors.

What’s more, women have to be covered from head to feet and they do not have the choice, they also can’t get rid of this process, even if they want to they can’t escape.

In addition to this, those women are watched all the time and are forced to do things even if they don’t want to. The notion of consent does not exist in "The Handmaid's Tale world".

Beside the fact that they are trapped, this society is relevant, it shows to the world that their are some similarities with our own society and that maybe if we do not change some things we could end up like this.

A society where there is still inequality between men and women and where the oppression against women is something that still exists.

It could open people eyes about some situations with this example of a society that is deprived of freedom for women. Maybe people will realise that the fact that our society has some commonalities with the book is very scary and that maybe they should speak up for society to change.
