Observation at restaurant
I did my observation at a restaurant because I work there and usually I am there all day. The restaurant is located on Center avenue, a very busy area, in East Liberty. I took a break between 2pm and 2.20pm. I sat at the third table of the restaurant where I can see the kitchen station, every table in the dining area and also the patio. In fact, the restaurant is an open place, with an open kitchen, so the customer can see what is happening in the kitchen. First, we are going to see how the restaurant is set up, then, we are going to talk about a table of four people, as well as a second table of two.
The restaurant has three parts but remains quite small overall. The first one is the kitchen station, which is situated close to the entrance and visible from the dining area. My co-worker is currently making a crepe for a customer. He drips batter onto a hot plate and with a wooden stick, rolls the batter into a circle. He then puts some cheese on the batter, and once melted, adds ham. There are two platforms for making crepes, a culinary specialty from France. Next to the kitchen is the bar, filled with different types of alcohol, but mostly french. Another co-worker is actually making a cocktail and singing at the same time. Then, there is the Chef, cooking some quiche, probably to serve it tonight. The second part of the restaurant is dedicated to customers, fourteen tables of different capacities of seats. Every table looks like each other, white tablecloths, white napkins, wine glasses and a little see through candle in the center. Six people are eating surrounded by twenty-two different types of paintings and pictures. They are all related to France, with French notes on some and some others representing differents parts of Paris. There are also some empty french wine bottles hanging on the walls. In the back of the restaurant is a patio which is delimited from the restaurant by a double door. There is eleven tables bordered by red bricks walls. Three workers are changing the awning.
My first observation is that the restaurant is more crowded than usual at this time of day. There are six people right now, one table of four and a table of two. In fact, the first table is seated right next to me. They are eating their appetizer, snails. They just ordered a bottle of red wine, called “Chateau Gonin”, an expensive move. A basket of bread is on the table, as well as a tart topped with mozzarella and tomatoes. There two older people, around their seventies, a woman wearing glasses, a red cardigan and a golden necklace. Next to her sits a man with a grey and black square jacket, also wearing glasses and a silver ring on his right hand finger, probably a couple. In front of them, there are two men, around forty years old. The first one is seated across from the woman, wearing a Pittsburgh Penguins jersey while the other younger man, is wearing a Pittsburgh Steelers jersey. They all have short dark hair, except the woman who has long grey hair. They are talking about politics, especially about the situation in Puerto Rico. The older man is explaining to the table that he never would live on the Island because it’s geographic location is too inclined to natural disasters, and that he would not feel safe, whereas, the man
