I would like to give a definition of this notion : This notion could be relative with the fact of the relation between a writer and his contemporaries has always been complicated. Indeed, it is common knowledge that writers have innovative ideas that sometimes go against the society.
How the black community fight for their rights ?
We saw in class the end of novel and the movie "The Help", the song and the poem "Strange Fruit" and "Southern Trees" by Billie Holiday and for my personal document I choose the act of Rosa Parks.
We will see in first part the unfair laws, then in second part we will show a show with racist fondation and for the last part we will see the result of this fight.
For this first part, we know that the racism in the United States is very present. The black community are said to be different from the white community but also called "lower race". There was therefore the establishment of Jim Crow Law which distinguished citizens according to their racial affiliation and, while admitting their equality of right, they imposed a segregation of rights in all places and public services. The largest ones introduced segregation into schools and most public services, including trains and buses. So we can see that in the film and the novel "The Help", racism is present, but this film mostly denounces the conditions of African-American domestics in the racist Mississippi of the 1960s. In the movie, The character Hilly Holbrook is a white woman who is very racist towards African-American servants. She even had the idea of creating separate toilets from the houses where they work, this is to prevent the white community from catching black community diseases. We also see that the rules are very strict for black people, because if they are not respected, they risk being arrested and put in jail or even be beaten if they do not let them do it.
In the song and the poem 鉄trange Fruit and 鉄outhern trees , we can see that this song speak of a black man killed and hanging from a tree realized by the Ku Klux Klan. The law allows KKK's actions on black people. Which brings back then that these laws are still unfair to black people.
In the act of Rosa Parks, the laws are always unfair, because, normally black people must be at the bottom of the bus to make room for white people. But she did not want to give a place to a white, so she was arrested and put in jail.
We can see that this laws are very unfair for the black people, because they are not treated as equals with the whites and are treated more as a lower race and therefore these laws had to be put in place to separate that difference. But the black people are often arrested in public and often in front of white people to reassure them that they will be punished. But for white people, seeing black people being arrested is like a game or even a show and that's what we're going to see in this second part.
In this second part, we will see how the arrestations of the blacks peolpe is like a game or a show of the white peolpe. In the movie The Help, Miss Hilly who had dismissed Minny had hired a new maid, and the maid found a ring for Miss Hilly and she decided to steal her to try to get her son to pay. And it was then that the owner of the ring saw it and then stopped the maid in front of the other black servants and in front of her with her son. Miss Hilly, therefore, looked at the arrest of her servant as if it were a show, and in fact profit her son. There are too the scene with when Miss Hilly tries to get Aibileen dismissed by accusing her of stealing and having her humiliated in front of Miss Elizabeth.
