The spectator discovers a young woman fleeing on an oppressive moor. At the end of her strength, she will be gathered by a young pastor and her two sisters. The young woman claims to be called Jane Eliott, she seems haunted by her past. Pastor St John Rivers and his sisters respect his secret; the pastor is going to help him by finding him a teacher's job.
Many flashbacks gradually illuminate the fate of the young woman. The viewer discovers his childhood as an orphan, abused by his aunt and cousins, then placed in a boarding school, Lowood, where physical punishment and deprivation are the custom. Young Jane befriends another girl who dies, carried away by tuberculosis.
At the age of nineteen, Jane left Lowood School to become the preceptor of Little Adele at Thornfield Hall, a secluded old castle. She does her job effectively but is bored. When she meets the master of the house, Mr Rochester, they confront their character and Jane asserts her freedom of speech despite her status as an employee. She attends several strange phenomena (fire, injury of a visitor, noises at night in the castle). His discretion, loyalty and freedom win the heart of Rochester. While this one seems to be courting one of his guests, Blanche Ingram, it is to Jane that he will make his marriage proposal. This one accepts despite the difference of social class. The housekeeper Mrs Fairfax warns her, however.
