Idea of progress
Today I am going to talk about Idea of progress . First of all I would like to give a definition of this notion : the idea of progress consists in believing that the world can become better in terms of art, science, technology, liberty and quality of life. Progress implies changes, some evolution from an old order with old traditions to a new order which may shake up deep-rooted beliefs.
In order to illustrate this notion I have chosen to talk about the development of India and attempts to answer this question : Is today's India a modern country ?
first of all, India is a booming country. Indeed, in the document “Changing India” from the NY Times, a journalist asks an indian woman about the difference between the India she left and the India she came back. She explains that the difference is huge. There has been breakthroughs in different areas. In the social field for example, with women who have a more important place in society and who are becoming breadwinners and children from the lower castes who have access to education; but also in the economic side, such as the purchase of foreign companies by Indian companies.
So, India is a country on the march, its GDP has been increasing at an annual rate of 8% for 13 years and Some cities are building some stopping malls which implies India is now part of globalisation.
Nevertheless, India must always improve itself and especially with its girls. The audio document “India's girls go missing” shows why there are so few girls in India. In fact, numerous Indian girls disappear each year because of infanticide, dowry-related murders or gendescide pratices. This results in a gender imbalances as there are 940 girls for every 1000 boys. Families are desperate to have sons because they are more convenient: they look after the family buisness, they take care of their parents and they have no dowry to pay. Because of that, India is becoming a male dominated society. It's a national reality and the state tries to stop this by forbidding parents from finding the sex of baby before birth but many parents will pay a lot to know it.
So, despite its development , India remains an unequal country, and especially between man and woman and between poor and rich. And these inequalities may be related to traditions like the dowry tradition which is one of the reasons why indians don't want girl, or the caste system which divides the people .
to conclude, we can not totally say that India is a modern country. Even if it is thriving and it make great social, political and economic progress, India has some way to go before all these people are on an equal footing.
And to my mind, India is one of those developing countries , which must try to continue to progress while taking care to it people. Inequalities must be fewer for India to turn into a modern country.
