—>The idea of progress : *Problematic : Is India is a modern country today?

*Definition : idea of progress : can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change (such as technical, scientific or social advance)

India has been a British colony and today it is the largest democracy in the world.

Around 1,2 billion inhabitants : the second most populated country in the world

Even if several difficulties, such as poverty, inequalities and economic issues -> becoming a thriving country.

Progress has been significant : is that making India a modern country? how the country achieve a tremendous change?

Part 1: From British domination to the largest democracy in the world. India was a British colony since 16th century and British rules applied.

Indian mutiny erupted in 1857 : because soldiers get supplied with cartridges greased with pig and cow fat. ->unacceptable for Muslim and Hindu. -> uprisings.

So many Indians fight for independence. A symbolic character : Gandhi started an anti British campaign with non violence way. -> India became independent in 1947 -> violence started when Bangladesh and Pakistan were created.

Despite poverty, internal conflicts and overpopulation : India has survived the past half century without a government collapse or military takeover. That's why we take about the world’s largest democracy.

Furthermore it is difficult to women to access to studies : however some succeed and play a huge role in Indian politics. In 2007: a woman became the first female president in India. (Patil)

Meaning that women’s rights evolve and it is a sign of modernity because most of developed countries with democratic regime never had female president. (France, USA)

Part 2: India is a modern city which has been made advances in economic, political and social aspect. -> booming economy. + technical and economy advances.

Development of high-tech cities such as in Bangalore with Infosys Technologies Ltd. (page 20)

Mumbai : megacity, such as Tokyo, New York : which gather international financial center, market place etc.

Thus Micro credit changed completely India : Muhammad Tunus developed the concept of microfinance. => which mean giving small loans to poor entrepreneurs. He made a revolution, the industry has been growing at 70% annually over the past 5 years. -> contribute to Indian economic expansion.

Morover it's a country on the march : on several points. The population is growing up, such as GDP growing up in different sectors of activity. for example in the agriculture, industry and services. Because its economy keeps transforming thanks to the rapid development of high-tech sector.

others : Changing India : women becoming breadwinners through microcredit and decentralized manufacturing + couples ending mariage more easily no matter society thinks etc.
