IDEA OF PROGRESS
I’m going to talk about the idea of progress. To begin with, i would like to give a definition of progress. Progress is the idea that the world and the society can evolve positively in therms of sciences, technology, modernization.
Now, i propose we look at the question : Should we fear progress ?
First, i’ll talk about positiv aspects of progress and then i’ll talk about the progress as something we can fear.
On the one hand, the progress has a positive aspect.
-There are medical reason : For example, on the recording of « Bionic man », a man who has a climbing accident, his legs were damaged by frost-bites. His doctors equiped him with protheses made of titanium, silicon and carbon composite. He seams pleased to be abled to walk and climb again thanks to progress and new technologies.
-There are technological progress indeed we can contact and keep in touch with everybody, and we can record and store billions of pictures and videos : For example, on the video « The Intelligence Revolution », the 60s device presented by DrKaku have 4000 calculations per second and cost one million pounds and it filled an entire room whereas the second device have one billion calculations per second, cost 50 pounds and it had a size of a nail. The progress increased the computer power thanks to technological progress.
On the other hand, we should fear progress.
-It can be dangerous, indeed robots and machines become more and more intelligent : For example on « Designer baby » ,Anna was conceived to give « body parts » or organs to another person but their feelings and reactions are different about their destiny : Anna refused to give her kidney to her sister. Anna is considered as objects.
Also, during world wars, sophisticated arms were devastating. For example : during world war II, atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki destroyed thousands of lives.
In conclusion, i’d say progress is neither all good or all bad. This progress can be used for medicine or great advances but the progress can be dangerous if humain doesn’t control this.
