Idea of progress

I’m going to talk about « Idea of progress ».Progress is the idea that the world and the society can evolve positively in terms of sciences, technology, modernization, and living condition. However, the idea of progress is still a debate between those who consider that it’s beneficial and those for whom it’s harmful. With my English teacher I studied the Fortnite game.  Fortnite is an online fighting game where many people fight the goal being to be the last to survive. Fortnite makes the link with the notion idea of progress because he help students and workers by creation scholarships and jobs. Now, I propose we look at a question: “How does modern technology affect today’s society? Does it have a positive or a negative effect?”

In the first time Fortnite allow to earn scholarships for students. Fortnite could actually help kids stay in school. Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio became the first university to announce it would offer scholarships for students who can play it well starting in the fall of two thousand eighteen. Ashland University is one of sixty six colleges and universities in the U.S that have joined the National Association of Collegiate Esports since it was founded in two thousand sixteen. National Association of Collegiate Esports is an association that organizes national university video games championships. For is part, Ashland University is building a new gaming centre for the e-sports program complete with twenty five gaming stations. The e-sports program offers scholarships of up to four thousand dollars. Its scholarships will allow students who have not settled for money and who do not practice sports at the level to continue their studies. So for this example we can see that progress has a positive effect on society.

In the second part Fortnite creating jobs. Private tutoring and test preparation in the U.S has grown. Now, some parents are even shelling out for extracurricular lessons in the video games Fortnite, paying for online tutors to help their children perform to the best of their ability in the game’s survivalist Battle Royal function where one hundred online players compete in a fight to the death, with only one winner. The website Gamer Sensei has hundreds of coaches, many of whom specialise in Fortnite, and charge between $10 and twenty five$ an hour, to offer their services over the internet and help improve gameplay. Tutors are involved with scholarships that schools offer, so Fortnite is modern technologies that can create jobs and help students continue their studies through scholarships.

However, the video games and scholarships that are offered may encourage students to pursue their studies to focus on video games. Private lessons and training take a lot of time, so students are more tired and less focused. Moreover scholarships can be given to students who do not very deserve but who win video games, so can be discriminating against students who work very hard but can not afford to pay for studies and who do not earn scholarships.

To conclude Fortnite is a modern technology that positively affects society today through the creation of scholarships and jobs, but this example allows us to see mainly positive aspects. To some degree, for me modern technologies are mostly positive.
